Learning target: I can demonstrate an understanding of how the idea of "a single story" can impact how others are perceived.
- Mini-lesson: Commas and Semi-Colons
3.Chimamanda Adichie: "The Danger of the Single Story." In this TED talk, Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie talks about the limitations and dangers of a "single story" view of cultures and people.
- What single story did Adichie's college roommate believe about her?
- What does Adichie say has historically been the "single story" about Africa? Where did this "single story" come from?
- What does Adichie mean when she says, "the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete?"
- Give two examples of how Adichie dispels the single story of Nigeria.
3. Adichie means that a single story should not become the only story. Stereotypes make one story become the only story; they show only one side of a person, or group of people. In this way, the many stories that make someone who he/she is, the many other stories that form a person, are overlooked; this is the problem. When none of the other stories are considered, one's identity becomes incomplete. Stereotypes rob people of dignity, making recognition of equal humanity difficult.
