English 9 Course Syllabus

CP English 9- Leavitt
2016-2017

Essential Questions:
  • What makes a hero?  Does this definition differ depending on where you are in the world?
  • Should a person’s responsibility to their family, tribe, or community take precedence over their individual goals?
  • How do we overcome adversity?
  • How have stereotypes impacted and shaped historical and/or current events?

These questions will be the framework for this course.  Along the way you will be supported with strategies for reading, writing and revising.  Grammar will be emphasized through the revision process,  and vocabulary will be studied within the context of the texts.

Major Texts:
  • Selections from The Odyssey and other myths
  • Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
  • To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
  • Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
  • Literature circle novels
  • Selected short stories and poems

Grading:
  • 20%: Habits of Work (Preparedness, Engagement, Determination)
  • 30%: Graded Assessments (quizzes, presentations, graded HW)
  • 50%: Summative Assessments (essays and projects)

Absences:
You are responsible for the work that is covered in class on the day(s) you are absent. This can be done by checking my blog (http://leavitt9-1.blogspot.com/), emailing me, or checking in with me after school Monday-Thursday (room 308 from 2:25-2:45).

Emails:
I check and respond to email on a daily basis during school hours. If you have a question about something or need assistance, don’t hesitate to send me an email; however, I will only respond to emails that are written with your audience in mind. Please keep in mind that if  you send an email that reads like a text to a friend, you may not get a response!
Late/Missing Work:
Homework is due at the beginning of each class. If work is late, it will negatively affect your habits of work (HOW) grade. All work for the unit needs to be completed before reassessment can take place.
