- Writing prompt: Think about this statement: To know one Mainer is to know them all. Write: How would you feel (or do you feel) about being judged on your own ethnic group?
- Read “Feeling Dragged Through the Mud, as MTV Comes to West Virginia,” and respond to the following prompt in groups:
- Define: prejudice, stereotype, generalization
- Where do stereotypes come from?
- Do you think reality TV shows like “Jersey Shore” and “Buckwild” promote stereotypes? If so, do you think they’re just harmless entertainment, or do you think those stereotypes are dangerous?
- If you could produce your own reality TV show, what would it be about? Would you try to avoid promoting stereotypes? How?
Prejudice: an unfair feeling of dislike for a person or group because of race, sex, religion, etc.
ReplyDeleteStereotype: : to believe unfairly that all people or things with a particular characteristic are the same
Generalization: a general statement : a statement about a group of people or things that is based on only a few people or things in that group
Stereotypes come from people seeing one person or a group of people doing something, or acting a certain way, and they make an assumption of all people.
The stereotypes that come from Jersey Shore and Buckwild are not always dangerous, but could cause problems. People could feel offended by the stereotypes. I think the shows promote stereotypes if you believe them, but people need to remember not all people act the same way. If Diamond were to produce a reality show, it would be about the life of a high schooler. She would avoid promoting stereotypes, although it would be hard. The main focus of each show would be interviewing a new student every episode to really get the different types of people and their hobbies, likes, and dislikes.
Prejudice is a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. Stereotype a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. Generalization is Making an assumption based on a group of peopl.
ReplyDeleteStereotypes come from southern America.
I think reality tv shows promote stereotypes but they are not dangerous.
If we could produce my own reality tv show it would be about Germans living in Asia. I would avoid promoting stereotypes by making the Germans unaggressive and the Asians not stereotypical Asians.
1.
ReplyDeleteA. Prejudice: An unfavorable opinion though beforehand.
B. Stereotype: A conception held in common with a group.
C. Generalization: To generalize based on an idea.
2. Seeing how a certain group of people act that doesn't apply to everyone in the group.
3. Yes we think reality TV shows promote stereotypes. We think they are dangerous because if it gets out of hand it can cause fights.
4. I would make a show called "The Brother's in Arms." It would about the soldiers in Afganistan. (Josh wants money so he would promote stereotypes) I wouldnt.
Prejudice: an assumption, or a pre-judgment
ReplyDeleteStereotype: fixed assumption of a group of people, usually based off of a historical event or story.
Generalization: general assumption of a larger group.
I think they don't specifically depict stereotypes for the place being (where they're from), as much as they just focus more on the stereotypical people in that area. Embracing really.
Put every type "stereotypical" person in a dome and see how they can live with each other.
